Harbor Island West Marina leads push to integrate recreation, commercial space, and maritime operations.

Along San Diego Bay, numerous waterfront projects are in motion to enhance public access, support the regional economy, and modernize maritime infrastructure.

The list includes Harbor Island West Marina, which will begin construction this month. It is one ofnearly a dozen ongoing, proposed, and completed projects in that area, including the construction and renovation of housing, recreation, parks, piers, a performance center, a shipping terminal, and landscaping. San Diego International Airport also got a facelift, a project completed in September.

The $70 million Harbor Island West Marina project developed by Beauchamp Leslie Development & Management will modernize marina infrastructure, expand public access, and introduce new amenities across 25+ acres of water and land.

The area has long-awaited the construction, according to a release, as its plans wove through the normal course of public agency permitting, according to the developers.

The project is designed to support recreational boaters, marine businesses, and the greater San Diego community. Spanning 3.8 acres of land and 22 acres of water, the large-scale project includes substantial waterside and landside improvements that will modernize marina infrastructure, enhance guest amenities, and introduce new public-facing spaces reflecting San Diego's waterfront lifestyle.

When completed, the revitalized Harbor Island West Marina, located at 2040 Harbor Island Drive, will feature 623 new slips for vessels from 20 to 140 feet, expanded boater amenities, and 16,000 square feet of commercial space.

Harbor Island West Marina is funded by private ownership capital and financing from Wells Fargo and supported by a new 50-year lease agreement with the Port of San Diego.

Waterside construction will be led by Bellingham Marine, a California-based leader in marine construction, whose project scope includes new dock systems, upgraded utilities, and significant marina infrastructure improvements.

Pacific Building Group, which built the bayfront's Portside Pier, will lead landside construction and deliver a new boaters' lounge, fitness center, pool, and spa, as well as a public viewing deck and waterfront promenade designed to enhance access to the San Diego Bay shoreline.

The project design team is from Orange, Calif.-based AO.
